"Do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."
For a couple of days, I have had the word “devour” going round and round in my mind. On a walk, taking a shower, cooking some food…it’s there again and again….devour!
I felt that it was a deliberate prompting from the Holy Spirit about devouring the Word of God. I knew I had to act quickly and obey!
I looked up the dictionary definition and the word devour means ‘eat hungrily or quickly.’
I’m sure we have all devoured a favourite meal or snack – its such a good feeling and you feel so full and satisfied afterwards.
Well this is what the Holy Spirit was saying to me about the Word of God - the Bible. Devour it – hungrily and quickly! Afterwards you will be full and satisfied.
"Like newborn infants long for spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation."
1 Peter 2:2
So, I promptly set myself a couple of challenges in how I can devour the Bible at this time. You know you will only devour something if you are hungry for it. You will only devour it if you have an appetite for it and there is room in your tummy! If you are full with other things how you devour His Word? It is just as when we are full with snacks or junk food and then can’t eat our main meal!
Why don’t we clear some space in our hearts and minds right now and ask God to put a hunger for His word in our hearts. Let’s stop snacking on the wrong stuff, on the junk that just fills us for a moment and has no lasting benefit. We may surprise ourselves how hungry we quickly become for more and more as the appetite grows.
Because I have set myself some challenges, I have had to create space and time. I have had to say ‘No’ to some things and move things around in priority order! It can take longer to prepare a healthy and nutritious meal compared to a quick fix microwave meal but the benefit to our natural bodies is worth it! How much more the benefit to our spirit and soul as we feed on His Word.
I have invited others on the journey with me. We are accountable to each other, encourage each other and grow together. Let me encourage you to do the same.
Don’t underestimate the power in the Word of God as you devour it!
For the word of God is active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
