We cannot give what we don't have

Jesus’ summary of the Law was 1) Love the Lord your God and 2) Love your neighbour as yourself. They were in this order for a reason.

God is first. He is worthy of that honour, all things came through Him. It is in loving God first that we are then able to abide in Him. When we abide in Him, His love is imparted to us and then can we extend that to others.

Through obeying the first commandment, we get what we need to obey the second - love. We need His love in order to pass ‘Him’ on. He is love.

Every May, I take part in the Dudley Trail. This is a series organised walks around the natural beauty spots in my town. Of, course like so many other events, it has been missed this year but I was shown in my prayer time recently how the rangers walk in pairs, two at the back and two at the front of every group of walkers, to ensure the safety of participants. In the same way God hems us in, behind and before (Psalm 139:5).

I felt God reminding me of the Israelites as they crossed over into the desert. There was a pillar of fire by night and a cloud by day that went ahead of them. In Isaiah 52:12, it says that God will go ahead of us and be our rear guard. God wants no one to be left behind. The rangers can go faster than any of us but they choose to walk slowly behind us so that we can enjoy our walk. In the same way, God shows great patience towards us.

He takes us the best route, not the easiest but the best. Sometimes, narrow, sometimes steep; we visit places of outstanding beauty, still waters and green pastures, each leg of the journey causes us to grow up. God knows how to take care of His children and where he wants them to go.

Being slow to obey might be an issue on our part but God waits for us and is working on us all the time. God brings us to the place of prayer where we grow in our love for Him. He is then able to use us to love the world.

Are you struggling to show love to someone in particular? Spend time with God, obeying the first and He will help you fulfil the second.
