Timings and Seasons

Timings and Seasons

This morning the BBC reports that there will be a bumper crop of cherries in the next few weeks. Cherry season in England ends in July, so why the surplus of late cherries in mid-August? You may remember that this year we had an unusual start to spring, a cold April with showers arriving late in May. This isn’t a weather report but a reflection on the consequences of that season. The late spring meant that trees were dormant for longer, allowing them time to build up energy and resulting in a produce of higher quality, super sweet cherries.

I love buying cherries off the market but this year I remembered too late and by the time I went to town, the season had passed. Or so I thought. BUT GOD- (I love seeing these words in the Bible, they always precede something wonderful), is full of surprises. The longer the wait, the better the fruit and not just that but the wonderful surprise of having something good come unexpectedly and out of a natural season is a blessing indeed.

In Ecclesiastes we read that, ‘He has made everything beautiful in its time…’ and that ‘Everything has its season.’ (Ecclesiastes 3:11, 3:1-8) In the natural, everything does indeed have its season but sometimes in our lives we may feel entitled to blessings at a certain time because we think that is what we are supposed to receive in that ‘season’ of our lives. We may look around and see evidence of this as everyone else is being blessed. However, not everyone’s season is on time (according to what we judge as the right time.) God determines the time and His timing is perfect. The extra waiting time may very well produce virtues in character that give God greater glory and make us a greater blessing.

Romans 5:4-6 says, ‘And patience produces character, and character produces hope. And this hope will never disappoint us…’ So no matter what we see or sense coming to an end in the natural, let us remember God knows the desires of our hearts and is full of surprises.
