God's Heart for Everyone

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives.’ 2 Peter 3:9-11

There are times when I join the author of Revelation in saying, ‘come Jesus, come.’ I long for evil and suffering to end and for Christ’s reign on earth to begin. Then there are times when I think of all the people not yet saved and am glad of the time God has given. If we want to see justice and the world put right, how much more does God, Who created it and knows what it was meant to be?

Earlier in this letter, Peter reminds the reader of Noah and the flood. What stops God from speeding things up or doing something similar again? It’s the same thing that stopped Him from wiping out Nineveh. His care, concern and compassion. We see this in Ezekiel 33:11 too, ‘As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.’ It is God’s desire that everyone will repent and be saved. God has a heart for everyone. Joel 2:32 and Romans 10:13 state that, ‘Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ Anyone. God is not for the few, or even the many, He is for EVERYONE.

Of course, not everyone will be saved and the day when our time’s up ‘will come like a thief in the night.’ But what should we do in the time we have? ‘Live holy and godly lives.’ (2 Peter 3:11) We, the Christians in the Last Days, should be seeking His kingdom and His righteousness and living with the aim of reflecting and revealing God’s heart to those who do not yet know Him.

I thank God for His perfect timing, His mercy in giving time and being patient towards us. May we all ask God to fill our hearts with His desire, that we might love others enough to care about where they stand in the light of eternity.

Inward prayer: Lord, help me to be alert and aware of the times we are in. Help me to live a holy and godly life.

Outward prayer: Lord, help me to feel your heart for everyone and to tell people of your love.
