Kingdom Roots

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.’ Colossians 2:6-7

If you are a tea lover, you might have drunk or heard of Gushu PuErh Tea. It is one of the most expensive teas in the world. ‘Gushu’ means ‘Ancient Tree.’ PuErh tea trees mainly grow in Yunnan province in Southwestern China. Gushu PuErh is special and expensive because it is made from leaves growing on those ancient tea trees which are about 200 years old and above, some tea trees are even older than a thousand years old. The older the tea tree, the bigger and deeper its roots and the more nutrients it can absorb from the ground, which increases the richness of the tea. So Gushu tea is  rich and smooth with high minerality that creates many health benefits.

This made me think what kind of soil/ground am I rooted and built up in? How big and deep are my roots? Do I have all the nutrients for my spiritual life to continue to grow bigger and stronger? The longer I follow Jesus, do I become more mature and more like Jesus? What kind of taste, flavour or fruits come out from my life?

In Colossians 2:6-7, Paul encourages the Colossians to live rooted in Jesus. A tree that is rooted and established in solid ground is strong; the deeper the root, the firmer a tree can be and is not easy to blow over when storms come. If our roots are deep in Jesus, our walk and life will remain reliable and strong, nothing can shake us because Jesus is our nourishing strength. Then, faith is our connection to the root. The more we trust Jesus and obey His teaching, our faith becomes stronger and we will easily become a person full of joy, overflowing with thanksgiving. Joyful gratitude is one of the fruits of being rooted in Jesus.

Jesus is the only solid foundation, all other ground is sinking sand. All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ. The more we trust and obey Jesus, the more truth, wisdom, power and freedom we will receive, and less easily we will be deceived and led astray.

In John 10:10 Jesus says, ‘I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.’ He is the only way that we can have abundant life, He is the only source for us to achieve spiritual fullness.

In our walk with Jesus, there are so many distractions, temptations and challenges. Let us keep focusing on Jesus and stay rooted in God’s unfailing love. Let us also trust that God’s grace is sufficient.

My prayer is may we be like a tree planted by streams of water, abiding in Jesus our living water, unshakable and unmovable. May the roots go deeper and stronger, may we bear fruit in season and have leaves that do not wither. May we be full of Christ’s fragrance to bless others.
