Kingdom Partnership

'In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.' Philippians 1:4-6

Friendships are great. A good friend is there for you in good times and when times are tough. There is something so wonderful about being able to have people in the flesh with you who you can talk, laugh, cry, pray and celebrate with.

Sadly, many people in our world and in this generation will not be able to relate to having true friendships. It is said that many will find it hard to name even 3 close friends they have, true friends who know you and want the best for you. This is primarily due to the culture we live in, where we have settled to instant ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ on our social media platforms rather than real face to face interactions with people over the years – where we let them into our lives and speak truth over us, pray for us, challenge us, encourage us and vice versa.

In this passage in Philippians 1 we read about Paul’s thoughts towards the Philippian Church. Paul was so happy when he prayed for them and when he remembered all that they did for him, he was extremely thankful but more so to God who had worked such kindness through the Philippians. He thanked God for the Kingdom partnership with the Philippian Church.

The Philippian church partnered with Paul in spreading the gospel from day one. They didn’t wait till Paul was big and popular but got behind in supporting and cheering from the early stages of the ministry. Not only did they support Paul financially but also spiritually, and their concern for his well-being as he continued in spreading the Gospel.

In turn, Paul expresses his gratitude through praying for the Philippian church and rejoices over the work God has started in the Philippians, having complete faith in God to finish the good work he started in them. This a true example of a Kingdom partnership, where there is mutual support to assist the work of God.

This, however, is not the first time we see this worked out in scripture. The foundational pattern of the early church finds its expression in true Kingdom partnership (Acts 4:32-37) which of course, helped a great deal in advancing the work of the church. The churches in the early days were interconnected both in the gifts and grace of God upon their life and due to this, not one of them lacked one thing.

We too are to cultivate friendships and partnerships where there is edification from each other as we pursue Jesus, where every joint in the body of Christ supplies its gifts for the building of the total church, whether that’s support through prayer or financial and moral support - all done so as to advance the Gospel and in doing, bring glory to our Father.

Inward prayer: Father, lead me to those who I can support and encourage through my words, my hospitality, and my finances in advancing your Kingdom.

Outward prayer: Father, would you stir people’s hearts to give and sow into your Kingdom by supporting each other in advancing your Kingdom. I pray for more Kingdom Partnerships, where the body of Christ strengthens one another through support as we spread the Gospel.
