Don't be afraid

‘ Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city. When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. "Oh, my lord, what shall we do?" the servant asked. "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."  And Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.’ (2 Kings 6:14-17)

These verses show that understanding that God is with us is important. It is likely that Elisha couldn’t literally see all the spiritual beings that were on the mountain, but he had faith and because of that he understood that God was with him and therefore, it didn’t matter about the army in front of them.

When we understand this truth, there is no reason to fear. Knowing the reality that God is with us gives us confidence no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in. ‘If God is for us, who can be against us?’ (Romans 8:31)

These verses also remind us the importance of being aware of the spiritual. Elisha had spiritual discernment to know what was going on around him - we need to have this same spiritual discernment as believers, because we have the spirit of God, we need to have that sensitivity to the spirit.

There is always spiritual activity happening around us more than we are able to physically discern, it is so easy for us to be living in spiritual blindness, not realising the reality of the spiritual - just like Elisha prayed for the servant in this passage, we have to ask God to open our spiritual eyes to be able to see the spiritual around us.

Prayer: Lord, help me to have an awareness of the spiritual, I pray that you would open my spiritual eyes, in Jesus name, Amen.
