No favouritism here

When I was growing up, one day, my dad came into my room and whispered, “you are my favourite child.” As I had four siblings, this statement meant a lot and sunk in deep. It lasted until the moment I found out that he was saying it to all his five children, not only me. My favourite, special status had been busted.

We can often show favouritism in life, in that we only listen to a certain singer, go only to certain restaurants or remain loyal to a tech brand.

It begs the question, does God have favourites? On the surface, we can be tempted to believe so, because He clearly blessed Joseph in Egypt with favour, He helped Joshua conquer the promised land and He gave a special grace to David for defeating Goliath.

We can see that favouritism is ever so present in our life all around us. Some people are more “favoured” than others. Some are more beautiful, smarter or have more luck than others. Even sometimes, we see people who don’t “deserve” it, getting more blessed than us. So we might translate this, that God is favouring certain people more than others. He is blessing some people exceedingly and maybe I am just not “one” of God’s favourites.

This is wrong!

The fact is, God doesn’t show favouritism, as we can read in verse 34. God is not favouring individuals because of their status in life, their nationality, or their material possessions. He does, however, respect their character and judge their work.

Verse 35 shows us that God “accepts those from every nation who fear him and do what is right.

God does love everyone equally! There is nothing we can do so that He loves us more and nothing we can do so that He loves us less. God loves you as much as he loves Joseph, Joshua, or David. He loves you so much, that He orchestrates your life in every little detail. For Cornelius, He orchestrated the vision, and Peter came to his home to share the good news of Christ.

The key is that Cornelius accepted it and prepared his home and life for Peter to come. He made arrangements for friends and family to come around to hear it as well. He didn’t sit back and wait for what was going to happen, he took action to receive the blessing of God. He put himself in a position to receive and he was expectant.

If we live with the same attitude as Cornelius, our lives can be completely transformed. Maybe today it is time to repent of the mindset that you are not favoured by God, and take on the mind of Christ and accept His love. Be expectant for how even today your life can be orchestrated in small details to the glory of God.
