Obedience and kingdom movement

In these verses, Jesus is sending out the 72. Reading these verses, I felt like there are a few things that we can pick out:

1) Jesus sends us out to reach people with the gospel and to see his kingdom advance on the Earth.

There are people out there who need to hear the gospel– it is a call of God for us as followers of Jesus to reach people with the gospel. ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out worker into his harvest field.’ (Luke 10:2). There are many people who are ready to receive Jesus and we have to be ready to reach them. We are sent into wherever we are, whether that is in our school, workplace, or area that we live.

2) Jesus gives us authority.

This means that it is not by our own strength; we are empowered by the Holy Spirit and through him we can see miracles, signs and wonders and God transforming lives in a powerful way. There is a level of boldness and confidence that we are able to have as we step out to reach people with the gospel. We know that, ultimately, it’s not about us but what God can do through us when make ourselves available and are ready to be used by him.
God wants to use us as vessels to see his kingdom advance on the Earth. ‘Heal the sick who are there and tell them the kingdom of God has come near to you’. (Luke 10:8) ‘ I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy , nothing will harm you.’ (Luke 10:19)

3) We will not always see the outcome we hope for, but it is all in obedience to God.

When we step out and reach people with the gospel, there will be people who will reject the message and will not want to hear it. These moments that can feel discouraging – however, obedience isn’t about the outcome, it is about doing what he is telling us to do. Our only job is to obey God- everything else is up to him.  ‘But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go to its streets and say, Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you Yet be sure of this: the kingdom of God has come near.’ (Luke 10:10-11)
