An invitation for the mothers…
As a mom of three I get to experience the fun of Mother’s Day each year with treats and hugs and thank you messages! These gifts are given to moms because as a society we recognise the sacrifice of mothers who willingly set aside their own desires for the good of others. We’re so grateful for the mothers who give and serve and raise others in a sacrificial way. Romans 12:1-2 encourages us:
‘Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect wil
There are many demands on Mothers today. I saw a funny acronym MOM: Master of Multitasking! It’s so true! In this sea of worldly demand and expectation let us offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice. In the busyness of life, and the demands of motherhood, I hear the Lord calling us mothers into the place of prayer. We could see this as ‘another thing’ on the list, but I sense the invitation from the Lord for us to view this as the ultimate call, the top priority, the sacrifice He desires. Getting up in the small hours of the morning can feel like a sacrifice but this is the gift we give ourselves and the gift awaiting us from the Lord. Time with Him! Psalm 84 describes it like this:
‘How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young—a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.
Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.’
We can get busy with life or choose to be still and bring a sacrifice to the Lord, to establish a secret place, a dwelling place with the Lord. A gift awaits us when we choose to accept His invitation: Jesus! An encounter with Him! As the scripture tells us when we prioritise loving Jesus, we will experience springs, autumn rains, strength, blessing. From this place life flows to all that we are masterfully multitasking in! What a place of strength we will live in to love others even more – especially our children!
Happy Mother’s day!
